The three limits

Period Maximum Note
Daily driving time 9 hours May be extended to 10 hours twice a week
Weekly driving time 56 hours A week runs from Monday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00
Any two consecutive weeks 90 hours Combined, for every two weeks in a row

You must respect all three limits at the same time. If you drive 56 hours two weeks in a row, you reach 112 hours and so exceed the 90-hour limit.

What counts as "daily driving time"?

Daily driving time is the total accumulated driving time between the end of one daily (or weekly) rest period and the start of the next. It is therefore not about the calendar day. If you drive past midnight at night, everything counts together as one "day".

Example

Monday 10 h, Tuesday 9 h, Wednesday 10 h, Thursday 9 h, Friday 9 h = 47 hours. You have already used the two extensions to 10 hours. On Saturday you may therefore drive a maximum of 9 hours more (56 − 47 = 9). In the following week, you may not drive more than 90 − 56 = 34 hours in total if you reach the full 56 hours this week.

Driving time outside the EU counts

Time you drive in a country outside the EU also counts towards your daily and weekly driving time.

Other work with a different vehicle

If you also drive vehicles that are not covered by the Regulation (for example, a small van in domestic transport), you record that time as other work. It is not driving time within the meaning of the Regulation, but it is not rest either.
